Q & A: Brian Michael Dunn, Jason Gubbiotti, Jon Malis, and Eric Uhlir

Brian Michael Dunn (American, b.1982) creates paintings and sculptures that mine the visual language of mass reproduction. Born in Milwaukee, WI, Dunn received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from Boston University and a Master of Fine Art from Cornell University. Dunn is an alumnus of the Hamiltonian Artists Fellowship and was awarded a DC art Bank Grant in 2022 and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Grant in 2019. Dunn has attended the Millay Residency in Austerlitz, NY, the Byrdcliffe Residency in Woodstock, NY and the Yale Summer Painting Program in Norfolk, CT. Recent commissions include Google Headquarters in Arlington, VA and Costa Palmas Casitas, Cabo, MX. Dunn has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the region, most recently at the Kreeger Museum, Washington DC, Hamiltonian Gallery, Washington DC, Mono Practice and the Reinstitute, Baltimore and Tiger Strikes Asteroid, New York. 

Jason Gubbiotti (American, b. 1975) received his BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in 1998. Since then, he has exhibited in the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. His solo exhibitions have been mounted at Civilian Art Projects, Hemphill, PAH Projects and FUSEBOX. Selected group exhibitions have been “Landscape Confection” curated by Helen Molesworth at The Wexner Center for the Arts, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and The Orange County Museum of Art, Centre d’artContemporain, Atelier Estienne (France ), FRIART / Kunstalle Freiburg (Switzerland) , Flowers Gallery in London, Stadtgalerie Saarbrucken (Germany) The Katzen Arts Center, and Curator’s Office in Washington, DC. In 2007, he received a Bourse d’aide a la creation, DirectionRègionale des Affaires Culturelles, Metz, France and in 1997 a Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant. In 2021-2022, he will be a mentor of painting at Turps Banana in their Correspondence Program which is based in London. He currently lives and works in the countryside, just outside of Paris, France. 

Jon Malis (American, b. 1984) received a Master of Fine Arts in Film & Electronic Media from American University in 2011, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from The George Washington University in 2007. Malis is an interdisciplinary artist investigating the representation and display of visual content, focusing on how various methods of presentation and production can alter the viewer’s perception, interpretation, and experience of photography and visual culture. He has received numerous awards and recognitions such as the National Photography Award from the von Lebig Art Center (Naples, FL), DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities Artist Fellowship grants, semi-final nominations for the Lumen International Prize in Digital Art, Janet & Walter Sondheim and the Trawick prizes and a Panavision New Filmmaker Grant. His work has been exhibited extensively in the Washington, DC region, nationally, and internationally; reviewed in the Washington Post and Naples Daily News; and featured on Maryland Public TV and PBS. Recently, he has participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Otis College of Art & Design (Los Angeles, CA) and the Slade School of Art inLondon. He currently holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Photography at Loyola University (Baltimore, MD). 

Eric Uhlir (American, b. 1979) grew up in Southern California and earned his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. His work is both figurative and abstract, examining the Anthropocene in the context of art history. His Solo exhibitions include "Eudaimonia" at Homme Gallery (Washington, D.C)., “Before, After and In Between" at Culture House, (Washington, D.C.) and "Remember an Infinite Wave" at Caitlin Berry Fine Art (Washington, D.C.). His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions such as "A Colorful Life" HOT•BED: (Philadelphia, PA), “Here We Show Again", The Strathmore, Washington, D.C., and "Recalled in Human Memory", IA&A at Hillyer: (Washington, D.C) and "Red Hot Red Dot", Women and their Work in (Austin, TX). His work has been written up in the Washington Post and is held in private collections internationally. He has received numerous awards and recognitions such as The Boynes Artist Award in 2022. He lives and keeps a studio in Washington, DC.
