Richard Tinkler American, b. 1975

Biography

Richard Tinkler creates instinctual, labor-intensive paintings that transform the field of geometric abstractionism, articulating a universal grammar of shape, color, and pattern that is transposed from one work to the next. In his practice, Tinkler embraces intuitive gesture over theoretical definition, with his works oftentimes coming to fruition over the course of a single day. He develops copious, chaotic layers that are eventually superimposed atop one another, his rigid geometric structuring undermined by an assigned sense of movement and hallucination. His psychedelic aesthetic decisions invoke a disorienting effect on the viewer, dictating the metaphysical properties in the physicality of oil paint. Similarly, his meticulously rendered drawings are enthused with an identical energy, captured within the gridwork of his kaleidoscopic abstractions. Tinkler’s large-scale works culminate as a joyous, unbridled expression of geometric infinitudes, emerging his distinct voice in the enduring relevance of abstractionism.
